This will result in fewer dental appointments necessary to complete any dental work.

Statistics show 50% of the population put dental care at the bottom of their healthcare list because of fear or pain. Oral conscious sedation provides a simple and safe way to maintain your dental health. For anxious patients, it's like a miracle.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Questions surrounding medical procedures are common for all patients to have. There is even more of that associated with dental procedures. One great advancement in the medical field to ensure patients are comfortable at the beginning, during, and after the procedure, is the field of sedation.

Sedation is, by definition, a lowered awareness of consciousness. This means they are less aware of their surroundings and less aware of their actions and words. This can be achieved in different ways by alleviating the uneasiness and anxiety about dental procedures. This helps them stay relaxed so the surgical procedure can be performed without any complications.

The field of sedation dentistry has exploded to take care of patients with just those types of problems and concerns. For decades, patients who have had concerns over the pain of dental procedures have just had to deal with it. Thankfully, there has been a shift in philosophy over the last few decades, as the dental community realized that the patient's level of comfort is vital to a successful procedure. It helps with the success rate of surgical procedures. If a patient is in the middle of a surgical procedure and flinches or reacts adversely at any time, there can be extensive damage caused. Patients should contact us at Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry to find out more about sedation dentistry options.

What Types of Sedation Are Available?

There are several different levels of sedation available nowadays. The vast majority of all dental procedures will generally only call for a minimal amount of sedation. During this type of sedation, the patient is relaxed but completely conscious and aware of their surroundings.

With moderate sedation, the patient's awareness is lowered even further than that of minimal sedation levels. All of the necessary cardiovascular functions are maintained and although the patient's level of consciousness is lessened, they can still answer questions.

With the strongest level of sedation, patients are completely unaware of their surroundings and cannot communicate whatsoever. They are completely unconscious. This level of sedation is incredibly rare and reserved for only the most complicated surgical procedures.

Who is a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

It is important patients understand that the biggest part of sedation dentistry involves finding the perfect balance between sedation and minimizing discomfort for the patient. By finding that balance, it will greatly decrease the chance of accidents during the procedure. It ensures the patient's safety by keeping them relaxed so they do not adversely react at any time during the procedure. If you find yourself having dental anxiety and avoiding coming to the dentist because of it, you are likely a candidate for sedation dentistry. We will review your medical history and perform a dental exam beforehand to be sure.

Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?

Our office takes the care of our patients very seriously. We work hard to keep them sedated and relaxed so they can remain calm throughout the surgeries. Sedation dentistry is safe and is closely monitored by our dental team during your procedure. There are some minimal risks and side effects in any medical procedure, and we will review those with you before your procedure.

How Long Does Sedation Last?

The length of time sedation lasts depends on the type you have been administed. Some sedation wears off immediately, while stronger sedation may take up to 24 hours to fully be out of your system. We will give you more detailed information, depending on what type of sedation is used for your dental procedure.
