Bone Grafting
Green Bay, WI

Diagram of dental implant in to jaw bone at Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry in Green Bay, WIBone grafting is a minimally-invasive oral surgery that is done to increase the quantity and quality of bone in your jaw. Bone grafting materials are mineral reservoirs which encourage bone development and can be harvested from different sources, including your own body, a cadaver, an animal’s body, or from a lab-made source.

Since our bone has regenerative properties, bone grafting procedures are very effective. As your bone grows, it will replace the bone augmentation material which will be absorbed by the body and will give you a jawbone that is strong and healthy.

Why Do You Need Bone Grafts?

At Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry, Dr. Hallas will recommend a bone grafting procedure if you have a low density jawbone. Low density jawbone may be a result of:
•  Chronic and advanced periodontal disease.
•  A dental injury.
•  Lack of jaw stimulation after tooth loss.
•  Hereditary or congenital defects.
•  Tooth root abscess caused by bacteria.
•  Jaw tumor or cysts.
•  Wearing dentures or dental bridges for a long period after tooth loss.

If your jaw bone has low density, it will not be able to support dental prosthetics like dental implants, implant-supported bridges, or All On 4 overdentures.

With the help of bone grafting, we can augment your jawbone and improve its health so that it becomes a solid foundation for your dental implant and gives you a strong and beautiful smile for a lifetime.

Types of Bone Grafts

There are several methods of bone grafting in dentistry and they depend on the location and severity of the bone loss:

Socket Graft

Socket graft is the most common type of bone graft and is used to prevent bone necrosis in your alveolar ridge once a tooth is lost or extracted. This involves placing the bone grafting material into the tooth socket which will encourage bone regrowth over the course of three to six months. This also reduces postoperative pain.

Sinus Lift Procedure

This procedure is commonly done when a person requires a dental implant in the upper jaw, which has low quantity bone. This procedure involves carefully lifting the sinus membrane from the jaw and filling the space with a grafting material. Since the graft is placed close to the sinuses, it can take up to 12 months to heal.

Lateral Ridge Preservation Graft

This type of bone graft is used to augment the width of your jawbone so that it can accommodate a dental implant.

Block Bone Graft

Block bone grafts are done in case your jawbone has large areas of soft or low-quality bone. We may harvest grafting material from the back of the jaw which usually has denser bone. This material is then secured on the affected places with titanium screws. The procedure takes up to six months to heal.

Bone grafting is a straightforward procedure which is very safe, painless, and effective. Once the grafting material is placed in your jaw, we may prescribe you antibiotics to fight off infection and painkillers to manage any lingering discomfort. You will also be required to keep regular appointments so that we can ensure your bone graft is healing well.

If you are in need of a dental implant, schedule a consultation by calling us at (920) 278-7678 and we will check your jawbone health to determine if you require a bone graft or not.
