Many of us enjoy the benefits of having teeth without taking a moment to think about just how important they are to us and how we use them. We only notice them when something goes wrong. Our teeth are a very important part of our bodies, helping us to eat, speak, and stay healthy overall. That said, before we can talk about what premolars are good for, it's important that we know all of the different types of teeth and what they are good for.
Incisors
Incisors are the 8 teeth at the very front of your mouth. There are 4 incisors on the top jaw and 4 incisors on the bottom jaw. They are pretty useful for biting and are usually the very first teeth to grow in our infancy.
Canines
There are four canines in the human mouth. These are typically the second group of teeth to grow. They are called canines because they resemble fangs, although they aren't as fang-like or sharp as the canines of other animals suited to hunting and eating flesh. All the same, they perform roughly the same function, allowing us to tear and rip our food.
Premolars
Premolars are also known as bicuspids and they are the teeth we use to grind and chew our food. Adult humans have 8 premolars, four on each side, with two on the upper jaw and two on the lower haw of each side. Premolars don't have any primary, which is to say they aren't developed by infants and then shed so that they can regrow as permanent teeth. They grow only once, starting around the age of 10, and they're all we have for life.
Molars
Molars are also used for grinding and chewing foods and have both primary and permanent types. The primary types grow starting around 12 months. They are later replaced by the premolars as you grow older. The permanent molars come in much later in life, starting at age 6 and going on sometimes to the age of 30. Don't take your mouth for granted. It's an absolute blessing. Make sure you take care of it and visit us if anything goes wrong with the teeth you have along the way.
