There are several ways you can adapt to using dentures. Given that these oral appliances are vital for replacing missing teeth, you need to adjust to them in order to eat comfortably. Even though dentures are molded and specially designed to fit your mouth, they might be uncomfortable during the first few weeks of wearing them. It might take a few weeks to adjust to these appliances and start using them comfortably. Some patients experience severe discomfort that it becomes difficult to taste some foods. This is mainly due to the lack of proper chewing. Luckily, there are several ways you can get rid of denture discomfort when eating.
Stick to Soft Foods
During the first days of wearing new dentures, you should stick to eating soft foods for the best results. By doing so, you create sufficient time for your mouth to adjust to denture. It also makes it possible for dentures to finally settle into your mouth. Within a short time, you will start eating food comfortably without the effects of denture discomfort. Therefore, we advise that you start with eating soft foods then gradually graduate to hard foods. Some of the soft foods you can start with are puddings, cereals, apple sauce, and boiled eggs.
Cut Down Large Pieces and Chew Properly
It is recommended that you chew food properly before swallowing it. You should also avoid gulping down on large and hard pieces of food because they could cause choking. We advise that you slice fresh fruits and vegetables into tiny pieces to enable easy chewing. If necessary, cook vegetables to soft levels before serving. Avoid some type of cereals because they can stick to your dentures and cause infections. Such foods will attract bacteria that results in various dental problems.
