Can Shark Teeth Cause Problems with Permanent Teeth?

Posted on 9/21/2020 by Dr. Hallas
Can Shark Teeth Cause Problems with Permanent Teeth?Shark baby teeth are something that's quite common with children. They happen when your child's baby tooth doesn't fall out once their permanent tooth erupts. Yes, this will leave your child with two rows of teeth inside of their mouth – hence the question as to whether this can cause your child to have problems with their teeth.

Why Shark Teeth Happen

These teeth commonly occur with your child's lower incisors. However, they also occur when your child's upper incisors or their primary molars start growing in. Typically, your child's permanent teeth will dissolve any roots from their baby teeth. Unfortunately, this doesn't happen fast enough when your child develops shark teeth.

What to do with Shark Teeth

Usually we don't need to do anything about your child's shark teeth. Nature will simply take care of things and they'll ultimately end up with only a single set of teeth. Occasionally, there are times when even if given time nature doesn't work out. This is usually more common with the upper archway of teeth which are more stubborn about falling out. When this happens, we may recommend having them extracted (a.k.a. pulled). Regardless of when or how it happens, the permanent teeth should then move forward into their proper location. Of course, even here there are times when we may need to help your child's teeth become properly aligned through orthodontics.

How Long you Should Wait Before Taking any Action

Since this is much more of a common occurrence than you might think, you don't need to rush into our office for an extraction. However, if you're starting to feel a bit nervous about the situation and don't have an upcoming dental appointment for your child, you should go ahead and give us a call so you can schedule one. This will give us an opportunity to discuss the best plan of action with you.
