Differences Between Inlays and Onlays

Posted on 9/14/2020 by Dr. Hallas
Differences Between Inlays and OnlaysIf you learn you need an inlay or onlay, you may start to wonder how these restorations differ from one another. Both restorations are designed to fill decayed teeth. While an onlay is often recommended for larger cavities, inlays typically are prescribed for medium cavities. An inlay or onlay should be used when a filling is not adequate.

Comparing an Inlay with an Onlay

When it comes to inlays and onlays, the main distinction between these restorations is how they fill a tooth. While an inlay fills the area on a tooth between the cusps, an onlay covers the cusps of a tooth. Fillings can shrink and cause more decay to develop over time. However, when an onlay or inlay is used, the filling material is made of porcelain. An onlay or inlay is used when the cavity is too big for a filling, but too small for a crown.

Does an Onlay Cover More of an Area than an Inlay?

An onlay does cover more of an area than an inlay, and has even been called a partial crown. An onlay is used when we have determined that the restoration does not need to be as expansive as a crown. Both an inlay and onlay may last as long as three decades or more as long as you take regular care of your gums and teeth. What you pay for an onlay/inlay may cost around $650 or higher. It just depends on the restoration and location. If you schedule a consultation, we can provide you with further details on the process and cost.

Would you like to find out more about inlays and onlays? Either of the two restorations make it possible for you to enjoy better dental care while saving more of the tooth. Schedule an appointment today to see how you may benefit from having an inlay/onlay placed.
