If you have new dentures, you can find it a challenge, at first, to chew or eat. However, don't worry. This type of challenge can be met with a little due diligence. The following information will help you make the transition to wearing dentures easier and more pleasant.
Why It Can Be Hard to Eat at First with Dentures
To make eating easier with dentures, you need to find out first why chewing may present a challenge. When you receive new dentures, you, no doubt, may feel excited about eating some of the foods you did not eat in the past. However, you need to make a slower transition. It takes some time to get used to eating with dentures. That is why you need to take baby steps until you make the adjustment.
How to Make Chewing Easier
To make eating easier, at least for the first few days, it is best to eat liquid-like foods, such as pudding, oatmeal, apple sauce, and soup. Therefore, give yourself a couple days before you start eating solid cuisine. Once you start eating regular foods, chew evenly, or on both sides of the mouth, to prevent slippage. You also want to chew slowly. Once you get into this habit, you won't even think about how you are chewing your food, or if it is difficult. You will also find eating easier when you cut your food into small, bite-sized pieces. Doing so will lessen the pressure on the gums when you bite down with your new prostheses.
What Should I Do about Gum Soreness?
Even if you are making it easier to eat or chew, you should still expect a bit of gum soreness. It is normal to have some soreness when you are getting used to wearing dentures. Should you note a sore spot on your gums, contact our professional staff immediately. We may need to make an adjustment to your prostheses.
Getting used to wearing new dentures does take some time. Use that time to practice eating correctly so you can savor the foods you like and enjoy better nutrition.
