Dental implant surgery is a major procedure, so the proper measures need to be taken to ensure acceptable recovery. One of the first things you will experience after surgery is hunger. This is because usually you cant eat for at least 6 hours before the surgery. Obviously, after surgery your chewing ability isn't as good as it normally is, and you must stick to a diet of soft foods. This is recommended for 10-14 days after the surgery so your mouth can heal correctly.
What You Can Eat
You want to only consume all liquid meals during the first couple days after you have dental implant surgery. All liquid meals include home cooked broths, smooth soups, protein drinks, smoothies, meal replacement drinks, and various juices. Lean toward nutritional drinks with high calcium to keep your teeth healthy. If you decide to have a fruit smoothie, only consume moderately if they contain high citrus contents such as grapefruits, oranges, etc. Citrus fruits are very acidic and can damage tooth enamel so be careful with the amount of these that you consume.
Cooked cereals are a great nutritious and easy to chew option. Oatmeal topped with mashed blueberries, grits with melted soft cheese on top or cream of wheat are good things to consume after surgery. If you want a more savory option, consider scrambled eggs. These are delicious and easy to chew while having oral health benefits as well. Eggs are a good phosphorus source. Phosphorus plays a huge role in maintaining healthy teeth. Egg yolks contain a high amount of Vitamin D which help keep your teeth strong and healthy by helping with calcium absorption.
Sweet potatoes can be mashed easily and are rich in vitamin C. Spinach and leafy greens are great for oral health. They are simple to chew and contain large amounts of calcium. If you love to eat meat, you don't have to leave it out of your recovery diet completely. You can have tender and moist meat such as beef, chicken, or turkey if it's blended with vegetables or potatoes in a food processer. Soft foods such as halibut, cod, or salmon are also a good option and contain Omega 3 fatty acids that aid in reducing inflammation.
