Is Getting a Bridge Going to Help You Keep Up Bone Density of Your Jaw?

Is Getting a Bridge Going to Help You Keep Up Bone Density of Your Jaw?Dental bridges are devices used to restore your smile when there is a missing tooth between two healthy teeth. Dental bridges are made and installed in different ways depending on your situation.

Porcelain, gold, or alloys are often used to create bridges, however, when you come into our office, we can discuss the construction material further. Since some people have a preference in cost over aesthetics, we make sure to discuss the options before implementing a new bridge.

The false tooth of the bridge is suspended between two teeth by using the two adjacent teeth as support. The device is mounted with dental adhesive to keep it in place. Because of the way bridges are installed in your mouth, they offer some support to the jaw, but if your jawbone density is at risk a dental implant way be a better option for you.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants have the same objective as bridges, to restore teeth, but there are added benefits to implementing them in some circumstances. When getting dental implants, the false tooth is attached to a titanium rod secured into the jawbone. This helps retain jawbone density by encouraging bone growth in the jaw. Opposed to a dental bridge where the false tooth is suspended between two teeth, implants are the only method of restoring a smile which has the ability to regenerate the strength of the jawbone.

Some other things to consider when weighing the options of bridges versus implants, is the location of the missing tooth. Bridges are more visible and make for a less clean look as the false tooth is not embedded in the gum. This could give an unnatural look if the location of the missing tooth is closer to the front of the mouth. However, bridges may be less noticeable when implemented in the back or side of the mouth. If you would like more information on the differences between dental implants and bridges, please give us a call at our office and we can further discuss them.
