How to Help Those with Dentures Care for Their MouthsIf you have an elderly loved one with dentures, you have probably wondered from time to time what you can or should do to help him or her care for them.

There is no question that having dentures makes a contribution to your friend or family member's quality of life. Dentures allow them to eat the food they enjoy, speak properly, and provide a boost to their appearance and self-confidence. Still, at the same time, dentures do require some maintenance that your friend or family member may not be used to performing.

In addition, proper care must be given to the mouths of those who wear dentures, and a denture wearer may not be able to render this care on his or her own. By helping him or her out, you can contribute to his or her well-being. Here are some things you can do to help care for their mouths.

Help Clean the Dentures

First, dentures must be properly cleaned on a regular basis to prevent them from developing into bacterial hot spots. Help your friend or family member remove the dentures, and then gently brush them from all angles just as you would your teeth. Use a soft brush on the pliable liner that comes into contact with the gum tissue, and then soak the dentures in a disinfectant for 10 minutes before storing them in sterile water.

Help Clean the Mouth

People who wear dentures need to take care to brush their gum tissue with a soft toothbrush, especially in places where the tissue comes into contact with the dentures. This helps clean out pockets of bacteria and promotes strong oral hygiene.

By helping your friend or family member with these tasks, you can help to ensure that he or she gets the most out of his or her dentures.
