What is Denture Relining?

Posted on 4/10/2019 by Dr. Hallas
What is Denture Relining?Dentures are an affordable and good way to replace lost teeth. Whether a person requires a full or a partial denture, it is one way to help overall oral health. But dentures are not perfect. Cover time they can change. The gums and the shape or contour of the mouth can also change.

All of this can lead to problems that make dentures uncomfortable or that cause more damage to the gums. Denture relining can help with the problems that dentures present.

The Purpose of Denture Relining

Because the shape and control of the gums and dentures can change over time, they do not always fit the way they should. Dentures that do not fit properly can damage the gums and lead to problems with the gums including gum disease. Gaps between the dentures and the gums because they no longer fit properly can create a place for bacteria to grow.

Denture relining is an option that helps restore the proper fit of the dentures. It presents an affordable option to replacing the dentures entirely.

Two Options
There are two options for denture relining. They are a soft relining and a hard relining. It is a good idea to understand the differences between the two options.

•  Soft Relining - A soft reline is the preferred option for many people. If the gums are sore due to the dentures, the soft reline offers the most comfortable option. It helps the gums heal any damage. It is a procedure done in the office that does not take much time. A polymer liquid is layered on to the denture to improve the fit of the dentures.
•  Hard Relining - A hard reline also puts a layer of material under the dentures, but the material is much harder and more like the material used for the teeth of the dentures. The dentures are typically sent off for a hard reline. They do not provide the cushion of the soft reline but can provide a better fit that lasts longer.

It is not a good idea to ignore dentures that do not fit properly. A denture reline can offer the best solution. If you have an interest in this or any other dental topic, contact our office to schedule an appointment today.
