Now that you have your new dentures it is very important to make sure that you know how to take care of them. With proper handling and care they can last a long time. Dentures are very fragile.

Even though they appear to be hard plastic they can break if dropped on a hard surface. Here are some basic tips on how to make sure your dentures fit right and last a long time.

Basic Things to Take Good Care of Your Dentures

Your dentures believe it or not are acrylic. They can absorb water and so there for can dry out also. It will be very important that you store your dentures in a denture solution or water when you're not wearing them.

If dentures dry out they could be permanently damaged, and you will need to get new ones. At the same time, it is recommended that you use cold or lukewarm water. Hot water can also cause your dentures to change shape.

Storing your dentures when you're not wearing them is a very good habit to be in. If you can't store them you can wrap them in a wet towel. Storing your dentures is a good way to remind yourself to clean them. It also acts as a safety net in case they were to accidentally get bumped. Not storing them and allowing them to dry out also make them that much more fragile.

Your dentist should recommend a denture toothpaste and a soft bristle toothbrush for your dentures. Using a medium or hard bristle brush can scratch them. It is very important when cleaning them that you cover the entire denture.

Leaving any kind of food particle or plaque behind can transfer to your mouth and cause problems. You can be left with some bad breath or even end up with a bacterial infection. We don't want any of that so ask your dentist what they recommended you use.

It is also very important to keep your dentures moist so that they fit correctly in your mouth. Also, schedule regular office visits with your dentist so they can make sure they are fitting properly and more importantly that your gums are looking good. A dry denture can change shape and lead to soreness on your gums. The idea is to not cause you discomfort while making you look amazing.

If your dentures do cause any pain or discomfort, schedule an office visit right away. In the beginning adjustments will need to be made as your gums heal and you get used to having them in your mouth.

Your dentist will also give you tips on what you can eat, how long to have them in each day and how to correct slurred speech. Once it's part of your daily routine, you won't even think about it. If you have any questions or concerns, contact your dentist's office.
