When You Should Not Consider Getting Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are a wonderful way of covering up some of the small imperfections that can creep up in your smile. However, they are not an ideal solution for everyone.

Some people can get a great looking smile with veneers, while others may end up with dental damage from having them placed.

It is very important that you take the time to speak with your dentist or prosthodontist about veneers before making the choice to get them. You need to be a good candidate before you get this process started.

Dental Veneers Are Not Right for Everyone

People who have teeth with untreated cavities should not get dental veneers. The cavities need to be dealt with first, so that the teeth remain strong enough to hold the veneers in place. If you recently had your teeth whitened, you may also want to wait on having dental veneers placed.

The whitening process can leave your teeth more sensitive for a short time afterwards, and if you were to have your teeth trimmed for veneers, it could be more painful than it would be if you waited.

Teeth that are decaying or dead may not be ideal for dental veneers, either. This is up to your dentist or your prosthodontist. They will have to look at the condition of your teeth and decide if those teeth are healthy enough to anchor veneers for the next 5-10 years. You will have to speak with them to find out what they think, and see if your mouth is a solid candidate for this type of procedure.

Dental veneers can be a great way of fixing problems with your mouth, but they can only go on teeth that are healthy enough to stand up to the trimming. Find out more the next time you see your prosthodontist.
