What to Do If You Lose a Dental Crown

It protects the tooth and allows you to chew and speak normally.

Losing a dental crown can be inconvenient and frustrating, but it's important to stay calm and take the right steps.

Immediate Steps

1~ Find the crown: If possible, try to find the crown. This will increase the chances of it being successfully re-cemented.
2~ Call your dentist: Inform your dentist about the lost crown. They will advise you on the best course of action, which may include scheduling an appointment as soon as possible.
3~ Protect the tooth: If you can't find the crown, cover the exposed tooth with temporary filling material (available at most pharmacies) or sugar-free chewing gum. This will help protect the tooth and prevent sensitivity.
4~ Avoid chewing on that side: Until you see your dentist, avoid chewing on the side of your mouth with the missing crown. This will help prevent further damage to the tooth and surrounding structures.

Visiting Your Dentist

During your appointment, your dentist will examine the tooth and the lost crown. Depending on the condition of the crown and the tooth, they may recommend one of the following options:

•  Re-cement the crown: If the crown is intact and the tooth is healthy, your dentist may be able to re-cement it. This is a relatively simple and non-invasive procedure.
•  Make a new crown: If the crown is damaged or the tooth has further decay, your dentist may need to make a new crown. This will involve taking impressions of your teeth and sending them to a dental lab for fabrication.
•  Consider other restorative options: In some cases, depending on the extent of damage, other restorative options like fillings, inlays, onlays, or even implants may be recommended.

Following your dentist's instructions is crucial for a successful outcome. They will advise you on proper care for your temporary crown (if applicable) and the permanent restoration.

Prevention Tips

Losing a dental crown can be prevented with proper oral care and regular dental check-ups:

•  Maintain good oral hygiene: Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, and use an antiseptic mouthwash.
•  Avoid biting hard objects: This includes ice, hard candy, and pens.
•  Wear a nightguard: If you grind or clench your teeth at night, ask your dentist about a nightguard to protect your crowns and other teeth.
•  Schedule regular dental check-ups: Regular check-ups allow your dentist to identify and address any potential problems early, including loose crowns.

By following these tips and taking good care of your oral health, you can minimize the risk of losing a dental crown and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile.
