Does An Implant-Supported Bridge Need Special Care?

Posted on 12/1/2023 by Dr. Hallas
Rendering of jaw with dental implant. An implant-supported bridge does not require special care. Caring for your implant-supported bridge is similar to caring for your natural teeth. An implant-supported bridge is a dental restoration that relies on two or more dental implants for support instead of neighboring teeth. This bridge type is an ideal option for individuals whose row has several missing teeth. By utilizing dental implants as the foundation, an implant-supported bridge provides a stable and functional solution to restore a natural-looking smile and proper oral function. The following are tips on how to care for your implant-supported bridge:

Proper Oral Hygiene

Make sure you brush your teeth at least twice a day. Pay close attention to the area surrounding the implant-supported bridge, gently brushing along the gumline.

Floss Daily

Clean between your teeth and implants using dental floss or interdental brushes. This will help remove plaque and food particles, maintaining the cleanliness and health of your implant-supported bridge and gums.

Avoid Damaging Habits

Don't use your teeth as tools to open packages or chew on hard objects. This can potentially damage your implant-supported bridge. Besides, avoid habits like teeth clenching or grinding as this can exert excessive force on the bridge and implants.

Rinse Your Mouth with Mouthwash

Use mouthwash to rinse your mouth. You should do this immediately after flossing or brushing your teeth. This helps to refresh your mouth and decrease bacterial growth.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Ensure you consume a balanced diet rich in nutrients for your overall oral health. Limit your intake of sugary foods and beverages, as they can contribute to tooth decay and gum disease.

A dental bridge lasts between 5 to 15 years, depending on maintenance level and type. However, an implant-supported bridge can endure for more than 20 years with proper care.
