Complications of Prosthodontic Treatment

Posted on 9/18/2023 by Dr. Hallas
Complications of Prosthodontic TreatmentToday there are different dental prostheses. They are both removable and fixed with different stress characteristics and material compositions. Each patient's oral condition and biological particulars are variable. These include systemic diseases and parafunctional behavior. Such factors can cause various complications. The major complications are listed below.

Wear and Tooth Chipping

Many people consider ceramics for their aesthetic qualities. As a result of that, modern dental prostheses incorporate ceramic materials. However, dental ceramics have tough lower fractures compared with metals. Most ceramics oppose the enamel, which can cause weariness of your natural teeth.

Ridge Resorption

Regardless of the teeth present, the tissue supporting them will be subject to mechanical strain. When a tooth is extracted or lost, the removal of strain is witnessed. The body can respond well by remodeling supporting bone structure and reducing its mass and volume.

Loss of Retention

Removable partial dentures can cause loss of retention in many patients. This results from an abutment tooth fracture that causes loss of function and stability. The fractures are useful in clinical practices.

Debonding

In many cases, there is the failure of bonding in resin bonded prostheses. Heavy occlusal forces cause prostheses to debond more easily than those placed in a less strenuous location. It is not that easy to detect debonding. In that case, there is a need to pay more attention during patient examinations.

How to Solve Complications of Prosthodontic Treatment?

There are many complications after tooth restorations. Mostly this comes from the shift of local microflora composition or biofilm formation. You need to maintain proper plaque control and have perfect oral hygiene procedures for periodontal and mucosal health. Also, to minimize or prevent the extent of the lesion, you are required to have a regular examination. Checking oral hygiene is vital to prevent future complications and we can do that when you come see us.
