Are dental implants part of prosthodontics?

Posted on 7/17/2023 by Dr. Hallas
Are dental implants part of prosthodontics?Do you suffer from tooth loss or want to replace a missing tooth, then you must have come across the word prosthodontics. Dental specialists offer different restorative treatments. One of the areas that is mainly focused on by prosthodontists is dental implants. So yes, dental implants are part of prosthodontics. You however need to understand what it really is.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a procedure that's used to help restore one or more missing teeth. It consists of two primary parts. First, is the implant itself. An implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone of the missing root. It works as a strong foundation for the prosthesis to be attached. The second part is the restoration. For one tooth implant, a dental crown is used and attached to the implant using an abutment, both collaborating to restore your aesthetic smile.

Dental implants are part of prosthodontics

Prosthodontics is a field involving all the dental procedures that are carried out to replace teeth or restore the oral aesthetics. This includes procedures like on lays and inlays, crowns and bridges, and even dental implants. Therefore, this places it perfectly in the field of prosthodontics since they are intended to replace a missing tooth or teeth and are highly reliant on prosthetics.

Prosthodontists specialize in dental implants

General dentists can learn how to place an implant. Many of them take classes that help them to learn more about placing dental implants properly. However, this does not mean that they will eventually be your best option. Prosthodontists must undergo at least three years of additional residency before they are certified. During this period, they get hands-on experience in the field of dental implants and a variety of other restorative surgeries and oral treatments. They spend years learning and studying the science behind the art of dental implants. Our team of dedicated prosthodontics will walk with you as we put your smile back to life, do not hesitate to call us.
