Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Posted on 5/15/2023 by Dr. Hallas
Wisdom Tooth ExtractionWisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are permanent teeth that are the last to erupt in the mouth. They start appearing when one is between the age of 17 and 25 years. Wisdom teeth may never erupt in some people. Wisdom teeth extraction is a surgical operation where a dentist pulls out one or more wisdom teeth.

Why Remove Wisdom Teeth?

The first reason why dentists decide to remove wisdom teeth is if they are impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can get trapped in the gums or jawbone, causing much pain. These teeth can also grow at the wrong angle, pressing against the neighboring tooth. Besides, dentists can extract your wisdom teeth if there is not enough room in your mouth to accommodate more molars. Also, if you are affected by gum diseases or cavities, you are unable to clean between your wisdom teeth with dental floss or a toothbrush.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction Procedure

You will discuss with the surgeon before surgery, where you will talk about your general health. If you are under medication, you will let your dentist know. The surgery takes about 45 minutes, and you will be anesthetized with either local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or IV sedation to control pain.

To remove the teeth, the surgeon may need to make a cut in your bone or gums. If so, the wounds will be stitched to promote speedy healing. After a few days, these stitches will typically dissolve. Additionally, they could put gauze pads inside your mouth to absorb the blood.

After surgery, most patients experience minimal to no pain. If the dentist uses a local anesthetic, you will comfortably go home alone, and many people usually resume their regular activities. However, if the dentist used general anesthesia or you still feel drowsy, you require someone to take you home. You may experience some discomfort or swelling after the surgery, but you must follow your dentist's instructions for a fast recovery.
