The Purpose Behind Crowns That Cover Fillings

Posted on 12/10/2018 by Dr. Hallas
The Purpose Behind Crowns That Cover FillingsGetting a filling is usually the only thing you need to do in order to get a tooth back to working order. However, in some cases, we may suggest to you that you get a crown to cover up the filling. If this is your situation, you are probably wondering why we are suggesting this.

What Does a Crown Do?

A crown is simply a construction that fits over a tooth which has been damaged. Whether the damage is due to trauma or decay, using a crown can help protect it and prevent any further damage. In some cases, a crown is enough protection to allow you to resume using your teeth normally.

Of course, fillings also work to protect a tooth, but in a different way. When your tooth has suffered damage, the filling acts to replace the portion of the tooth that is damaged. In most cases, a filling can be added to your tooth in such a way that no further treatment is needed.

Why Would You Cover a Filling with a Crown?

Sometimes, depending on the situation, a filling by itself may not be enough to be sure that you can return to using your teeth normally. Perhaps the location of the filling is in an extremely high wear-and-tear area of the mouth. Or perhaps the tooth itself has some structural deficiency that means the filling will not stay in place.

Regardless of the exact situation, a crown that is placed over the filling will eliminate any concerns of instability. In this kind of arrangement, the filling is in the tooth, replacing the damaged material. Then, the crown covers the entire tooth (including the filling) and acts as a shield to protect the entire structure from further damage.

So, if we recommend that you get a crown on top of a filling, we actually have a reason to do so. Listen to us, and your tooth will be as good as new in just a few visits.
