Do You Need to Floss with Dentures?

Posted on 10/10/2018 by Dr. Hallas
Do You Need to Floss with Dentures? We are all taught about good oral hygiene habits from a young age. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day is ingrained in our minds. We also hear about the importance of flossing. Good oral hygiene habits can help keep your teeth and gums healthy and happy for your whole life.

Despite what we learned, people still run into problems. They may end up needing dentures to replace teeth lost for any reasons. When this happens, they may wonder if they need to continue their old oral hygiene habits. They may wonder if they have to floss their dentures like they used to with their real teeth.

What Does Flossing Do?

The reason you brush and floss your teeth is to remove any debris that is left on and in between the teeth. It also helps remove any bacteria that builds up on the teeth. If you do not brush and floss regularly, the bacteria will build up and plaque will form. The plaque can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Dentures share many similarities with your real teeth.

Bacteria can still grow on the dentures, in between the dentures and on the gums. Brushing and flossing dentures helps remove the bacteria and the debris that gets caught in the dentures over the course of the day.

The Difference with Dentures

Dentures are typically removed before sleeping and left to soak in a cleaning solution. Because this removes debris and bacteria, some may wonder if flossing is still necessary. The answer is yes, it still helps to floss dentures. You only soak the dentures once a day and it may not remove debris stuck between the teeth. Flossing during the day can help prevent this issue. Brushing and flossing are still oral hygiene habits to practice even when you have dentures.
