"How Implants Fuse with the Jaw Bone"

Dental Implants Bay Lakes Center for Complex Dentistry WI 54303-2636Dental implants aren't a recent innovation, just one that's continually improved over the years.

How they work is a bit tricky to visualize. However, you should know that your jawbone will fuse to this new implant due to a process known as osseointegration.

What Osseointegration Is

Osseointegration is a fancy way of saying that your bone will grow around the implant (your artificial tooth's new root). If it helps you visualize things better, think about how coral grows around a shipwreck. This is a fusion process. When it's done with a dental implant the titanium bonds directly to your bone where it becomes part of your body.

Although most of today's implants are made from titanium, recently, research has been conducted that shows that your jawbone can fuse to other materials as well. While this is good news, you still don't want to use just any type of material. You need to use a material that's biocompatible - one that your human body will accept.

Choosing a type of material that isn't biocompatible will cause your body to reject it. Since titanium is very biocompatible your bone cells will easily grow onto its surface. Titanium is also a really strong material so it is strong enough to withstand the continual force of your teeth biting down on it.

Getting Dental Implants

Now that you understand how osseointegration works, you should have peace of mind about getting dental implants. These can really improve the way your mouth both looks and functions, giving your self-esteem a boost, you wish you'd had previously.

With all the great things you now know about dental implants all that's left for you to do is to call our office and set up an appointment to start the dental implant process today. We look forward to speaking with you soon.
